Unit 1 discusses teachers and learners. A good teacher has many different rolls to play in order to be an effective educator. The ability to be fair with students, having knowledge of the subject matter, and being able to motivate students are considered by many to be attributes of a good teacher. Teachers must be apt at switching rolls to aid in student learning; these rolls include: manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and monitor.
Learners are divided into two types: young learners, ages 2-18, and adults. The young learners are further divided into three sub-types: ages 2-7, 8-13, and 14-18. Each type of learner has strengths and weaknesses as they relate to learning, these fall under three main categories: motivation, experience, and behavior. Understanding these strengths and weaknesses is essential for a good teacher to be able to overcome any learning difficulties students may face.
