This unit discusses teaching the productive skills, speaking and writing. With speaking, teachers should strike a balance between accuracy activities and fluency activities. Accuracy activities, which focus on the correctness of the language, should be used to prepare students for fluency activities, which focus on experimentation and free language use. The same can be applied to teaching writing, which also includes considering spelling, punctuation, and other writing-specific aspects. A big takeaway from this unit and the previous unit is that there is a balance to be struck between accuracy and fluency, which skills are being practiced, and the kinds of activities needed to practice these aspects of language (games, role-play, group work, pair work, story-telling, and so on).
