Ellerbe, North Carolina TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I have learned a great deal about categories in the English language. Even when I study other languages, I have struggled with remembering the differences between the various tenses. The way the unit was laid out was very organized and allowed me to get a better grasp of each individual present tense by allowing me to see clearly the different formations. Since this is a tricky subject for even a native English speaker learn, I can only imagine how confusing it must be to learn as a second language. Some of the tenses seem very similar, so the break down on the various activities I could offer in class definitely helped me feel more confident in how I could engage the class in activity to help them learn. At first, I would have approached this lesson thinking that I would need to dominate the class time and continuously give examples. With that being my original thought, I wasn't sure how to know if my class was learning and understanding. However, as I read and practiced with the tenses I noticed that using the ESA method in the previous unit, this type of lesson would make a great unit to utilize a boomerang style ESA. I think having my students get more practice time where I can both listen and engage with them would be a fun and less stressful way to teach something this difficult, while also allowing the students to explore the language. I feel more confident with tenses so far and my ability to approach this with my future students.
