Unit 14 coves the topic of course books and lesson materials, including authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are made for the general public and are not tailored to EFL students. The unit also discusses the use of course books.
Authentic materials include: newspapers, brochures, menus, songs, radio programs, and television programs. Created materials made specifically for EFL students and are more suitable for beginner levels. Created materials include: crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap-fill activities, and picture stories.
Course books are good for new teachers as they provide structure, are graded for specific levels, have a balanced mix for developing skills, and provide the ability for students to see their progress throughout the course. However, they can become predictable and sometimes be out-of-date.
Teachers need to understand that course books are just tools in the teaching process. Teachers can choose to omit certain lessons if not beneficial or relevant, replace unsuitable material with something more appropriate, supplement the lesson with extra materials to reinforce a language point, and adapt the lesson to work for their students or teaching style.
