Unit 11 covers the topic of teaching receptive skills, which are reading and listening. There are different reasons for reading and listening. We do so for purpose, like reading instructions or getting directions. We do it for entertainment, like reading a novel or watching an action movie. There are even times we do it for both, like taking a guided tour of Europe to enjoy the sights and learn some history at the same time. We read and listen using different skills. We use predictive skills to guess the content of an article based on a headline. We use scanning to find specific information, like the latest stock price for Apple. We use skimming to get a general understanding of content discussed, like reading a Time magazine article about how robots are changing the workforce. We often times need to get detailed information from the content, like reading a step-by-step manual on how to file your own taxes. Lastly, we may have to deduce context, like walking up to a restaurant and seeing a sign that says, “shoes and shirt required.” This allows us to infer that if we are barefoot, we would not be able to enter the restaurant unless we wear shoes. Teaching receptive language skills entails being able to assess students abilities, pre-teach difficult or unknown language, carefully select texts while choosing topics that will create interest, and being able to assign tasks which are fun, engaging, and productive. Ultimately, none of this can be achieved unless you get to know your students.
