This unit was useful for giving me a general outlook of the class dynamic. The relationship between the teacher and the students is very possibly the number the one factor in how successful the students of a class are, meaning that anything the teacher can do to make a more encouraging, sensitive, thought-provoking, fun, and accessible learning environment should be striven for. In large part, this can be accomplished on the teacher's part simply by caring more about the students' learning than they do about simply teaching. To me, this means bearing in mind that they are more of a facilitator to student learning and progress than simply a person teaching a group of people something. When a teacher starts out, and indeed throughout their time with their class, they should evaluate the needs of the class and monitor the success and progress of their class in order to better develop lesson materials and direct class time. Part of this evaluation is having a clear understanding of cultural traditions for learning in the host country as well as taking in what the general level of language ability is for the class (and possibly 'diagnosing' the class from beginner to advanced). Additionally, being aware of how different age groups learn and the best methods for reaching your class given their age, motivation, current language ability, resources, etc. will help the teacher to prepare a lesson or series of lessons and develop a classroom standard that will most benefit the students and help to plan their progress into the future.
