Skills built for language-learning can be broken down into two broad categories: receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (writing and speaking). Within these categories are two subsets for the types of materials being taught: those for entertainment (like a novel or story) and those for purpose (like a user's manual or a news broadcast). This presents a wide variety of materials that should be used in tandem so that students can build both receptive and productive skills as they learn English. It is important to vary the subject matter of these materials so that each student's interests are piqued and thus they are more invested in learning the vocabulary/grammatical structures that are used when discussing that subject.
