1. Nouns are used for people, places, creatures, states. Some examples are
*Common nouns, e.g chairs, cars
*Proper nouns, e.g Rose, California.
*Countable nouns, e.g doors, birds.
*Uncountable nouns, e.g cheese, water, coffee.
2. Adjectives are descriptive in nature. There are comparative and superlative adjectives. Comparative adjectives are used to compare two people or things. e.g Tom is taller than Stephen, while superlative adjectives are used to compare groups of people or things. e.g, Tom is the tallest person the class.
3. Articles are used to modify a noun. They include the, a and an. Definite articles are specific while indefinite is not specific. An example of a definite article is 'The flower on my porch'. Example of indefinite article is 'a car in the parking lot' an event that just occurred.'
4. A verb describes an action e.g the police arrested a man. The word 'arrested' is the verb because it describes the action of the subject, the police. Transitive verbs are followed by an object while intransitive verbs stand alone.
5. Adverbs modify a verb and usually ends with -ly. Examples are quickly, slowly, mentally.
6. Gerunds are formed from a verb used as a noun and ending in -ing e.g playing football is fun.
7. Pronouns are used in place of more precise nouns. They include;
*Personal pronouns, e.g I, you, they, he, she, her, them, its.
* Possessive pronouns, e.g mine, his, hers, theirs.
* Reflexive, e.g myself, yourself, themselves. And
* Relative, e.g that, which.
8. Prepositions precede a noun or pronoun and show the relationship to another word. examples are in, on, at, from, after.
9. Conjunctions are words that join sentences or phrases. examples are and, or, neither, either, as soon as, before, until.
In this unit, I learned the different parts of speech used to form a sentence. I also understand that knowing how to use the different parts will produce a good and coherent sentence.
