After going through this unit, I realized the importance of teaching pronunciation as an integral part of the English course. This unit focuses on four areas of Phonology which are Stress, Rhythm, Intonation and International Phonetic Alphabet. Different pattern of intonations actually deliver different messages and indicate variation in the expression of emotions or feelings. In order to teach students the techniques for indicating intonation, a number of ways can be employed to help them in this regard. It includes the use of nonsense words, hand indications, humming or singing and marking on the board. The Stress only falls on the words that are required to pay attention to and where it contains the essential information in the sentence. The studies of International Phonetic Alphabet could be challenging for language learners in terms of the place of articulation and manner of articulation. From my own teaching experience, the students find it pretty hard to identify the difference between plosives, fricatives and affricatives. Some students have a very strong native accent which makes the studies of manner and place of articulation even harder when they tried to pronounce specific words with similar consonants. Allowing the students to see exactly how my mouth is moving and drawing a diagram of a mouth could be very useful for them to correct their pronunciations.
