Choosing appropriate course materials is an important part of planning and delivering any lesson. There are advantages and disadvantages to using each different kind: authentic materials are real and interesting, but can't necessarily be graded to the level of the students; created materials can be crafted to the level of the students and the lesson aim, but lack authenticity, take time to prepare and are often limited in their subject matter; course books provide a balance of vocabulary, grammar and skills tasks and are sequenced, but are somewhat inflexible and predictable. In my opinion, it is best to use a mixture of the three based on the needs of the students and the topic or aim of the lesson, perhaps with reference to a course book to ensure continuity and sequencing.
