TESTING AND EVALUATION
Three ways to assess a student language level are:
* tutorials - used to review the work done in the course of the week by discussing the aims of the lesson and how well the students performed the tasks and to identify any area of difficulty.
* evaluation by the students - the students evaluate themselves by means of a questionnaire or guided discussion. the survey is then collected and discussed and future lessons are considered on the basis of students' comments.
* tests - periodic tests are given to the students after a certain amount of the coursebook has been covered. these tests include:
* placement tests - used to grade student language level prior to the commencement of an EFL course.
* progress test - used to gauge what information the student has retained and what language he/she has acquired.
* diagnostics tests - given at the start of a course.
* practice test - used to prepare students for external examinations such as; TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language), IELTS(International English Language Testing System), TOIEC(Test of English for International Communication) and the various Cambridge Assessment examinations.
From this unit, I learned the importance of evaluating students at various levels, as this helps the teacher to gauge the students' progress and identify problem areas.
