unit 05 describes about Managing a classroom.The teachers eye contact,gesture,and the voice are important features when teaching to students.Eye contact is used to show the students that they are involved in the lesson, to ensure the students understand what they are supposed to do and to indicate who is to speak.
Gesture is important to convey the meaning of the language,manage the class,add visual interest and etc.
The voice should have a correct clarity,range,variety of projection and changed naturally according to circumstances.
When considering the grouping of students mainly it can be whole class grouping ,students working on their own and pair work.
Advantages of whole class grouping are;
creates a sense of belonging among the group.easier organization while it reduces student talk time and can be off-putting to shy students.
own work has many advantages like it allows teachers to respond to individual differences, less stressful for students than contributing in-front of the class room while it restricts possibilities for student to student interaction.
Pair work will dramatically increase opportunity for student talking time and interaction,gives student a safe environment while it can be rather noisy.
The class room arrangement depends on the space availability,type of physical items,age of the students, nationality and student personality.
Classes can be arranged as an orderly rows which is most suitable for a very large class, circles and horse shoes which is often used for smaller classes.Arranging separate tables are useful for group work while it can create discipline problems as the teacher is unable to maintain eye contact with all the students.
Teachers position of standing or sitting depends on the stage of the teaching ; presentation-standing, giving instructions-standing, reading activities-may sit, activation stage- Relaxed, controlled practice-occasional monitoring.
When a teacher is writing on the board she should not be talking while looking at the board.
A teacher should give an individual attention on students in a fairly manner.Advantages of TTT woud be that it will provide exposure of language and source of natural ,correct English.A teacher should keep in mind to avoid unnecessary teacher talk time.Establishing rapport by making seat arrangements.make the sudents talk to each other and maintaining discipline are important features of a teacher.Discipline depends on the age of children,motivation,rules and principals.Teacher should be punctual,well prepared, consistent and fair, show respect towards students to prevent problem behaviors of students in the classroom.
