This unit was incredibly useful in describing a wide variety of methodologies for teaching ESL. Having a list of methods, from which a teacher can pick and choose the parts that are suitable for their class, is a very valuable resource. The ESA method that is the primary focus of the unit also seems very useful, and the unit provides a number of examples and resources that can be pulled directly into the classroom. It gave a breakdown of the three stages of an ESA lesson - Engage, Study, and Activate - and gave a number of example activities and descriptions of each one, as well as three example formats for a lesson in this style, the Straight Arrow, Boomerang, and Patchwork. The end of the unit focused on correction, emphasizing self-correction and student-student correction over teacher correction. This is an interesting idea as it helps to cut down teacher talk time and can help students to feel more comfortable in the classroom. Overall, this unit provided a wealth of tools and information that I will definitely be able to apply in the classroom.
