This unit discusses the characteristics of a good teacher and the various roles a teacher has in the classroom. It also gives information that is valuable for the teacher about the various language levels that a TESOL teacher may encounter in their classroom. A good teacher must love what they are doing and must be patient and be able to motivate students to learn the new language as well as gently correct the students pronounciations and grammatical errors. The explanation of the various levels of L2 learners is important for the teacher to understand to have an effective class structure. If the teacher gives advanced vocabulary and grammar to a beginner or elementary level student they will not be able to understand the teacher and will quickly loose interest in the class. An intermediate and upper intermediate student will be able to communicate on a broder range of subjects, but the teacher needs to be assessing their fluency and accuracy in all parts of speech. In planning lessons for advanced students, the teacher needs to remember that the learner has a good knowledge of L2 and needs help learning the more subtle items such as idioms and other forms of speech that a younger learner will not yet need to learn.
