Conditionals and reported speech are the main focuses of this unit. Five types of conditionals which include zero, first, second, third and mixed are introduced throughout the unit. Zero and first refers to the actual or “real” action once the condition has been satisfied. In contrast, the other three conditionals indicate the hypothetical or ‘unreal’ situation that could never have been satisfied. Sometimes it is really difficult for students to identify the difference among them. A number of changes could take place when we convert direct speech into reported speech. The potential mistakes could be made in terms of verb tenses, patterns, pronouns, questions and time expressions. This unit also lists some of the teaching ideas which are intermediaries, reporting verbs and Media interviews, to assist students to learn the reported speech in classroom.
