Even though I am a native English speaker I have never really put much thought into how sentences work. Although I know how to make a sentence, the theory and rules behind it I did not understand. For example one of the new things I learnt was the rule for comparatives. If you use an adjective that has two syllables or less you just construct the sentence by saying the '(subject) + (adjective)er +(comparative thing), but if you are using an adjective that has three or more syllables you use a different formula. You construct it like this '(subject) + more (adjective) than (comparative thing)'. I had always done this naturally but never realised there was a rule behind it.
