This unit covers the different approaches, methods and techniques used in language learning. A detailed outline of the various methodologies namely,grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, PPP,task-based learning, communicative language teaching, community language learning, the silent way, suggestopaedia and the lexical approach are all provided along with their pros and cons. No one method or technique is distinctively better than the other, however incorporating each technique into a lesson plan can yield good results. Another vital topic discussed in this unit is the ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) method. This method is somewhat like the backbone to teaching English as a second language, reason being is that this method combines all the different methodologies and conditions to form set structures through which one can carry out a lesson plan. This unit also covers aspects of correction and feedback techniques. I have learnt a great deal on the different avenues I can take to plan my lessons and how to structure a lesson plan to tailor to a specific topic or activity.
