Unit 13: Pronunciation and phonology outlined the importance of proper speech. Intonation is the variation in volume, and pitch in a whole sentence. Stress is on different words in the sentence to indicate different meanings. The four parts of sound joining are linking, changing, (dropping, and extra lettering but these last two is not commonly used in American English speech). Teaching students the phonetic alphabet is advantageous because many different letters or pairing of letters in the English language can sound the same. This alphabet provides one symbol for each sound, and is great for students to learn proper pronunciation of English words using this system.
