The unit covered many types of language teaching (Grammar-translation, Audio=lingualism, Presentation, Practice and Production, Task-based Learning, Communicative Language Teaching, The Silent Way, Suggestopaedia, The Lexical Approach). This diversity of techniques was interesting to learn about since I have been doing some teaching using a mix of these various approaches without really thinking about the theory behind the teaching. Different approaches are suited for different settings, different student backgrounds, and for teaching the same concept different ways to reinforce it. The second part of the unit elaborated on the ESA model (Engage, Study, Activate). From this starting model, teachers can organize class time and include a variety of activities suited to each stage. This serves to enhance learning and keep students from getting bored. Finally, teachers should be thoughtful about when and how they correct students. Goals include building fluency and confidence and allowing students to self-correct or correct other students.
