This unit gives an overview of and explanations to different types of teaching methods. From the time of the beginning of the classical method a couple of hundred years ago, several different teaching methods were established. Especially since mankind got a deeper understanding of psychology in the second half of the twentieth century. Some of them come with negative aspects, however, that is why a more effective method called ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) was created. This kind of teaching combines the positive factors of former methodologies. It includes the most important characteristics of a good learning environment and that is a high exposure to the language, communication tasks, teachers' encouragement to discover language for oneself and input from the teacher.
