This unit delved into the logistics of how to approach first classes, classes of different sizes, and how to surmount difficulties that may arise when students are at different levels within one class. Avoiding course book work and instead organizing and participating in warm-up games on the first class can help establish rapport that is essential for success in both small and large classes. And, in terms of difficulties, reluctance to participate and the use of native language can be discouraged by utilizing group work and pairing weaker students with stronger ones. Class dynamics are hard to anticipate, by participating in low-stakes warm-up activities that get students comfortable in the class could be key to establishing a class environment that is open and welcoming and thus encouraging enthusiastic participation in the target language. As the class progresses, having extra activities on-hand and being willing to modify the course content to meet all students' needs can be key to keeping students engaged and excited to learn.
