When we are teaching a new language (be it vocabulary or grammar), we need to ensure that students are exposed to it, understand the meaning, understand how is it constructed and they are able to practice and produce it. When we want to teach a new grammar or a vocab, we use the straight-arrow ESA approach. When we want to teach a functions-based lesson, we can use the boomerang or patchwork lesson. We need to bear in mind that a learner's receptive vocabulary is always more than the productive vocabulary, therefore, we need to choose wisely, what are some of the vocab or grammar we want to teach in the class. (Depending on the students' level as well).
