Unit 6: Past Tenses follows a similar pattern that the present tenses do. The past simple used the verb plus the past tense -ed ending for regular verbs, but there are many irregulars that must be memorized. The usage is to express completed actions in the past. The past continuous indicates that a certain action was in progress at a particular time and uses the word 'was/were' and the verb plus -ing in the structure. The Past Perfect refers to a past action and a a related past action previous to that and uses the word 'had' in the grammar structure. The past perfect continuous is used to communicate longer actions in the past that had been going on continually up to the past moment, and uses the words 'had' and 'been' and the verb plus -ing. Both the past perfect and past perfect continuous tenses are not commonly used in the English language but important for language learners to know.
