Unit 16 explained the importance of receptive skills; detailing how reading and listening skills are equally important. A teacher must ensure they create a lesson plan that works on both areas. The unit also explains that even though these two skill sets are equal, they are different e.g. a student can reread a complex piece of text in order to deduce the meaning, but when a student is listening to a piece of information they cannot do this. It is important, with listening in particular, to pre-teach any vocabulary that could be problematic to help the student keep up with the material.
I also learned that a teacher must vary the topics they choose as a student's interest in a topic affects how they learn, and not every student will find the same topics interesting.
