Grammar places a major role in the English language and as such understanding grammar and how it works is key in teaching English. There are 8 major parts of speech in English grammar, namely, nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions. Each parts of speech is then further broken down into various subareas to provide more detailed information and various usage.
I have gained new information about the usage of various parts of speech. For example, I now have a better understanding of gerunds and how I can identify them in a sentence. I am now equipped with the knowledge on how to explain to students when and how to use the indefinite article 'a' and 'an' and the definite article 'the'. I have also learnt that grammar can be difficult not only for learners but also for teachers to explain the usage to the learners and bring across the topic in a simple and effective way.
