The productive skills are speaking and writing. For teaching both skills, students should be interested in the game/topic/activity to encourage participation. Different phases of the lesson should emphasize accuracy vs. fluency (ie grammar editing vs. free conversation). A student can be corrected in a positive manner when working on accuracy, but when doing a fluency exercise, the teacher should focus on content over errors. English is particularly challenging for most due to the spelling and pronunciation of many words that sound alike and are written differently or sound different but are spelled the same. Very tough for teacher and student! Competitive and cooperative games offer a chance to practice productive and receptive skills in a light-hearted way.
