Though writing and speaking fall under the same "productive skill" umbrella, they each require special attention when it comes to lesson planning. Speaking is often given most emphasis in class, but such an education fails to acknowledge the necessity for development of writing skills, as these are still very important in mastery of a language. Writing activities allow students to think through their ideas and formulate them in a way that is more formal and geared toward accurate use of the language (since they cannot correct mistakes "on the fly" like they can when speaking). It is important to build students' confidence in both of these skills equally so that they can feel comfortable producing the language in any form in class and, eventually, outside of class as well.
