In this unit we learn the elements choosing course books and materials for our students. We learn the difference between authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are materials that come from real life situations such as a map or a menu from a restaurant. Created materials are activities such as cross word puzzles or gap fill activities. Both of these can prove to be very useful for students and they study and use English. Authentic materials are beneficial because it gives students real life scenarios so that they feel comfortable in situations. Using course books can be beneficial for so many reasons. They give both students and teachers more of a sense of security and also makes sure that students are getting a balance of grammar, vocabulary, and other skills. When planning a lesson it is important to use a variety of supplemental materials if using course books while also using authentic and created materials alike. Giving students this balance will allow for students to progress appropriately according to their levels.
