Unit 18: Modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice are all important functions to teach to ESL students. Modal auxiliary verbs express ideas such as obligation, ability, possibility, and advice. Examples are may, might, need to, must, have to, have got to, should or ought to, can, could, be able to and would. Teaching ideas are role plays, rules, or signs. The passive voice is the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb and only uses transitive verbs (verbs followed by an object) such as take, buy, sell, and write. Passive voice is used instead of active voice when the person/subject isn't known, not important, or we don't want to say who performed an action. Clauses (dependent or independent) are a group of words containing a subject and a verb. Relative clauses are a dependent clauses that modifies a noun and describes, identifies, or gives further info about a noun, also known as an adjective clause. Phrasal verbs are multi-words that consist of a verb plus 1 or 2 particles (prepositions or adverbs). There are intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable phrasal verbs.
