The past tense in English has four main forms: the past simple (I went), the past continuous (I was going), past perfect (I had gone), and past perfect continuous (I had been going); all of which have an uncanny amount of irregular verb forms. This unit addressed that problem by clarifying when and why certain tenses are used as well as common student mistakes. Emphasizing the conditions that dictate when each tense is used could help to remedy the uncertainty that is sure to result from student confusion of when to use the verb "to be," and "to have" in these past tense verb forms.
