Unit 1 taught me about the roles of teachers and learners. It addressed the various roles that teachers play throughout lessons; these different roles are important at different times and it is imperative to move throughout the roles as necessary for the purpose of the specific task, lesson, point in instruction, etc. The unit also identified the qualities of good teachers and good learners. Good teachers are patient and knowledgeable, putting the learner above the teaching. Good learners are willing to ask questions, take feedback, and seek other opportunities to gain information and skill. Learners exist on a continuum from basic to advanced. The different levels are specifically named in Europe. There are differences between adult and young learners, in behavior, academics, risk-taking, etc. There are also many reasons as to why a learner may have difficulty gaining material whether it be for cultural reasons, a relationship with a teacher, or behavioral difficulties (sometimes directly tied to the style of instruction). Language learners often have specific motivations that propel them forward with language acquisition.
