Unit 11: Teaching receptive skills include reading and listening. The two different motivators for doing these two activities are for a purpose or entertainment. Reading skills include predictive, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction form context. Problems may arise in students learning new language point such as choppy reading, long sentences, and writing style (formal, informal). Potential listening problems may be continuous stream of unfamiliar words and loose context, speed of speak too quick, or different accents. In order to avoid these potential problems, teachers can pre-teach the vocabulary, carefully select appropriate level of text, choice of interesting topics, and create interest before lesson begins.
