The focus of Unit 3 is on the theories, methods and techniques for teaching the English language, with emphasis on the various types of techniques - including the pros and cons of each technique/method. After a review of the most common techniques, the Unit presents a key summary of conclusions that are drawn from the pluses and minuses of each method. This summary then leads to a recommendation for the most effective method, as suggested by Jeremy Harmer, described as Engage, Study, Activate (ESA).
The Unit then provides details around understanding the use and focus of each of the three elements, explaining how each of the elements of ESA makes it the most logical of all the methodologies for all new teachers to learn and apply in the classroom.
Lastly, the Unit focuses on corrections - both teacher driven (with a logical set of codes) and student-centered corrections. The key takeaways here are that there is a difference between mistakes and errors and the importance of students being able to self-correct.
