In this unit, I learnt the importance of the two receptive skills- reading and listening. Reading and listening are mainly done for the purpose of learning something new to achieve a certain goal, or for entertainment. For example listening to a comedian when you go to a show is listening for entertainment while reading an English textbook to learn vocabularies is reading for a purpose to achieve a particular goal. There are various ways to read and listen and they include; scanning, skimming, predictive skills, deducing from content and checking for detailed information. In other to avoid problems with listening and reading, a good teacher should pre-teach hard vocabularies before the listening and reading class and carefully select text to suit the language level of the students, he or she should also use interesting topics and tasks that will cater for the interest need of all students.
