Conditional verb tenses usually start with "if" (or when) and describe a variety of outcomes based on different given circumstances that follow the "if." Those given circumstances range in plausibility from extremely likely to highly unlikely, and different degrees of plausibility yield certain grammatical forms for sentence endings. And, when it comes to reported speech (relayed information), there are also rules that dictate the grammatical form to which the direct speech (the information being relayed) is changed. Conditional forms and direct/reported speech can be tricky for students since they mix a variety of past and present verb forms, but this can be combated by taking things slow and utilizing teaching activities that compartmentalize and specify one form at a time.
