This unit covers classroom management and its importance in the classroom. Classroom management covers nine main areas. These are: 1. Eye contacts, gesture and the voice. 2. Grouping students. 3. Classroom arrangement. 4. Writing on the board. 5. Giving instructions. 6. Teacher talking time and student talking time. 7. Giving individual attention. 8. Establishing rapport. 9. Maintaining discipline.
Each main area is then further broken down into subsections, with an outline of their pros, cons and usages. Eye contact, gesture and the voice plays an important role in not only building good rapport with students but also maintaining discipline. This aspect of the unit provides clear examples which can be used in the classroom. Grouping students can be broken down into three arrangements, namely, whole class, individuals and pairwork. Classroom arrangement depends on a number of factors such as, age of the students, physical space, materials available and students personalities.
Major issues concerning classroom management are also outlined in this unit. Some of these issues are discipline, rapport building, giving instructions, writing on the board and so on.
One of the most difficult areas of teaching is concerning the area of discipline. This unit has helped me to understand how I can overcome these difficulties, by using techniques such as eye contact and rapport building in the classroom. I have also learnt new techniques that can be used to reduce the dead time when writing on the board.
