The unit covered teaching theories, methods, and techniques for teaching ESL. Some techniques have lost their popularity over time. For example, grammar-translation does not focus on student-centered learning which is currently a fad in the education field. The main focus for the unit is the ESA method by Jeremy Harmer. ESA stands for engage, study, and activate. Using this method, teachers are able to have flexibility withing each segment of the lesson. The best attributes of the other methodologies can be incorporated into ESA. The lesson should begin with an Engage activity. Students complete an activity that elicits the use of the target language. The goal is to get the students thinking and speaking in English before the Study activity/activities begin. The last activity referred to as Activate allows for the students to utilize the new language information learned in the Study activity. Additional variations of the ESA method include Boomerang sequencing and Patchwork sequencing for lesson plans. The end of the unit lists various ideas of activities to use for each of the phases of the ESA lesson plans.
