Unit 13 is about teaching pronunciation and phonology which is the study, science and analysis of the physcical properties of sounds. Intonation is a variation of volume and pitch in a whole sentence whereas stress is more concerned with individual words. Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation can be 'nonsense words'; by gesture; humming and writing on the board. There are two basic rules for stressing words. One word only has one stress. We can only stress syllables, not individual vowels or consonants. Stress can only change depending where the speaker is from. A universal phonemic alphabet has been created to make sure everybody pronounces words correctly. There are 15 voiced consonants; 9 unvoiced consonants; 12 vowels and 8 diphthongs on this alphabet. Teaching pronunciation can be done as a whole class or during lesson slots or as the pronunciation comes up during a lesson.
