This unit covers conditionals and reported speech. Below, I will review all of the different conditional forms ands their different uses. While this unit test focuses heavily on reported and direct speech, I will still touch upon it briefly.
Zero Conditional refers to scientific facts, general truths as well as situations and issues certain to happen (using the word 'when').
Form: If/when + present simple, present simple
Eg: When you practice, you get better.
First Conditional is used to refer to a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain, once the condition is satisfied.
Form: If + present simple, will
Eg: If runs every day, she will be ready for the marathon.
Second Conditional is used to communicate a present or future 'unreal' or hypothetical situation that is presently not true and unlikely to happen.
Form: If + past simple + would/could/might + base form of verb
Eg: If I were rich, I would surf all over the world.
Third Conditional is used to refer to a hypothetical past action (or non-action) and the hypothetical past result.
Form: If + past perfect + would/could/might + have + past participle
Eg: If I had gotten a degree in business, I would have been a lot more successful.
Mixed Conditional is used to refer to a hypothetical past action or state and the hypothetical present result.
Form: If + past perfect, would + base form
Eg: If I had studied this week, my grades would be much better.
Lastly, direct speech is something someone says. However, reported speech is when an individual is telling a third party what someone else said.
For example: "I love chocolate," Julie said. <--- direct speech
"Julie said she loved chocolate." <----- reported speech
This sums up the unit.
