This unit is about teaching receptive skills i.e. reading and listening. Both skills are of equal importance in learning English. If possible, both aspects (reading and listening) should be incorporated into lessons along with writing and speaking. This helps to create a balanced approach to learning. Two key reasons for reading and listening include (1) to achieve a goal or purpose and (2) for entertainment. Useful learning from this unit for me was developing knowledge about the specific skills used while reading and listening and, in particular, the difference between scanning and skimming.
