Unit 5 is about managing classes. Eye contact is needed but too much eye contact could intimidate children. Eye contact is also necessary to maintain discipline and to send signals for example to indicate which student should answer a question. Gestures can be used to convey the meanings of words, to manage the class and to increase the pace, etc. Gestures should only be used when the meanings are clear. The teacher should have a variety in range and pitch of voice and avoid monotone language. There are different ways to seat the students in a class. These include orderly rows; circles and horseshoes; seperate tables etc. The seating arrangement depends on various factors e.g. class size and age of students.
