This unit focuses primarily on equipment that is often used in the classroom, such as the board, interactive whiteboards (smart boards), OHPs, visual aids, worksheets and work cards, a cassette recorder, CD player, videos and DVDs, video camera, dictionaries, course books, resource books, photocopiers, computers and online sources. Ultimately, the more variety there is in terms of the equipment a teacher uses in the classroom, the higher the chance of student engagement.
For example, one of the great things about OHPs is that it reduces the time the teacher has his/her back to the classroom. Instead, the teacher remains facing the classroom, which allows for valuable eye contact with the students. It also allows the teacher to write on the original while still being able to reuse it. Whereas using a board, leads the teacher to have his/her back to the class. Also, whatever a teacher writes on a board cannot be saved for reuse.
Below are a few of the aforementioned pieces of equipment/aids described in more depth and why they are beneficial.
Online sources are fantastic to integrate into one's lessons because they often feature audio and audio-visual content that interest students. YouTube clips would be a perfect example of such an online resource. As a teacher, I find dictionaries – both digital and print – to be tremendously helpful in the classroom because they serve multiple functions, including offering the definition of the word, its pronunciation as well as an example fo the word used in context. Lastly, resource books are great because they offer up alternatives to the activities and lesson in the course book, including grammar and vocabulary worksheets, picture cards and communication games.
