Unit 14 talks about coursebooks and lesson materials. There are basically two types of materials namely authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are things like magazines, newspapers,songs etc. that were not created specifically with students in mind. Created materials are usually designed by the teacher to supplement a lesson and are created with specific students in mind. Examples of created materials are crosswords and role-play cards. There are advantages and disadvantages of using coursebooks. Advantages include for example that a teacher works with a tried and tested, suitable syllabus that contains a balanced mix of grammar,vocabulary and skills. Disadvantages of using a coursebook could include that lessons might become predictable and boring as well as outdated and not targetting the specific learners involved. Coursebooks therefore are good to have but must always be supplemented by other materials. Teachers must use coursebooks critically and do their own research as well. Things to consider when choosing a coursebook include for example the price and availibility of the books amongst other things.
