Neptune City, New Mexico TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit focuses on teaching methods and how to use ESA to structure a lesson. Below, I will compare and contrast the two lessons and teaching approaches.
In the first lesson, the instructor does not demonstrate care for his students. He makes little effort to learn or use the students' names. Whereas in the second lesson, the teacher frequently addresses students by their names. As a result of this rapport building technique, the students tend show a greater level of engagement and confidence.
The next point that stands out to me is that in the first lesson, the teacher elicits responses from the students but never formally teaches/explains the language point to them. This probably why they seem confused – and, of course, results in a low level of participation. The language point in the second lesson, however, is clearly explained and the instructor checks for understanding.
A third aspect of both lessons that stands out is the use of praise. In the first lesson, the instructor rarely gives praise. And on the few occasions that he doles out praise, he uses it as a form of favoritism. The instructor even goes as far as to insult the students, calling them "losers." In lesson two, the instructor frequently and fairly gives praise both on an individual and a class basis. This creates a nice rapport between teacher and student and encourages participation.
Lastly, in the second lesson, the instructor demonstrates a tremendous amount of dedication to the class and care for his students. This will always elicit more positive results than if a teacher behaves as the instructor in the first lesson does. The first lesson shows an instructor who isn't prepared to adapt to the class' needs – for example, he planned an activity for an even number of students, but he ends up with a class of 11 – and doesn't explain activities and instructions well. Again, the more students feel a teacher cares about them, the more engaged and dedicated they will be to their own learning and progress.
These are the four major points from these videos that stand out to me as vital lessons in teaching.
