This unit introduces us to past tense grammar and how it is used every day in common speech and in writing. It’s important to understand these forms because they are confusing in nature. Students tend to confuse them with other forms. In order to teach it effectively the teacher must come up with simple explanations as to not allow students to develop bad pattern habits. Students might not understand the small nuance between I had worked in Paris for one year versus I was working in Paris for one year. One indicates surely that the speaker no longer works in Paris and maybe hasn’t in sometime, where the second indicates more to the story then just the speakers past experience. This is important to recognize in order to help learners understand the complicated nature of the language.
