Meadow Lake, New Mexico TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit focuses on the various parts of speech; that is, the different types of words that help us to form simple and complex sentences. Those parts of speech include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, articles, conjunctions as well as infinitives and gerunds. Each part of speech is then broken down into more specific categories. For example, articles are classified as 'indefinite,' 'definite' and 'zero article.' Indefinite articles are either 'a' or 'an,' and are used to talk about a noun in a general sense. For example: A laptop is good for typing essays.' A refers to laptops in general. Whereas, the following sentence uses 'the' to denote a specific laptop: The laptop on the desk is five years old.
Without writing a 1000-word essay to recap the entire unit, the most important message I gathered is that an ESL teacher should a basic understanding of these parts of speech so that one is able to guide his or her students towards a better understanding of the language. However, it is not necessary to be an absolute expert on all areas of grammar as there are areas of contention/disagreement when it comes to grammar.
