This unit is about teaching special groups. The focus is on teaching groups of specialized learners, as opposed to more general English classes. Consideration is given to a variety of specific groups e.g. beginners, individuals, children and English for Special Purposes (Business English). Each group has its own particular character and needs, and the teacher must take these into account in working with the group and shaping the learning to make sure it is appropriate, e.g. considering age, English level on entry, motivation, behaviour and suitability of activities. With respect to English for Special Purposes, consideration is given to the importance of identifying the specific needs of the group i.e. a needs analysis. Learning for me from this unit is the emphasis on being very aware of the nature and character of the group, and shaping the learning appropriately for that group. If this consideration takes place, the quality of learning will be much higher and student achievement greater.
