What I gained from this unit is the need for the teacher to take on a variety of roles. hSe or he cannot just stand in front of a class and teach a lesson but must have her pulse on the class itself. She must determine if the students are absorbing the information or not -- does she need to modify her approach in some way, perhaps by providing more modeling, or more directing and facilitating, or more motivation? She is key to all students experiencing success.
With respect to the learners, it brought home that various age levels must be taught differently. The adults are more often than not self motivated and in many respects will be easier to teach. Very young children, although lacking in the basics, are very often open and eager to learn. They are your sponges - a great motivator for a teacher. The adolescents will be the toughest nuts to crack. To achieve success, they will force that teacher to "up her game" and bring all her skills into play, which can be motivating in and of itself. Different challenges all along the spectrum .
