We learned about the different kinds of materials you can use in class to teach English. Authentic materials are those that native speakers engage with frequently such as magazines, newspapers and more. Students can find these more interesting because there is variety and students feel more confident in their ability to use them once they have been taught. Creating materials, on the other hand, is also a way to tailor the learning specifically to the student and their level. There are also course books that exist out there with their various advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include: it's easier for the teacher to plan lessons (especially those who aren't creative), the material has been tried and tested, allows students to see their progression. Disadvantages include: students expect it and can be disengaged, content often created for a general audience. Methodology, prices, supplementary materials are all things to take into consideration when determining whether or not you use a course book and to what extent.
