This unit highlights ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate) as the most effective teaching method for ESL learner.
During the "Engage" phase, the teacher must stimulate students' interest to prepare them for the lesson proper. This may include games or activities that will encourage everyone's participation.
The "Study" phase is focused on the language construction. It often starts with elicitation which may come in pictures, drawings, and other aides for a start-up before the discussion begins. At the latter part of this phase, the teacher must be able to drill exercises for the students.
The last phase is "Activate", wherein students are encouraged to freely use the language they already know and the construction they have just learned, and apply it in an activity that the teacher will initiate. It can be a role-play, debate, communication games, or anything that will let the students express themselves using English. The end goal of this phase is to evaluate and strengthen students' fluency.
